MAREAS
Location:
Cangas do Morrazo, Galicia
Year: 2016
Type: Equipment
Program: Thalassotherapy Center and Tide Pools – Rehabilitation of a salting factory
Area: 26.000 m²

Final Degree Project at the Barcelona School of Architecture: Rearrangement of the natural space of Punta Balea, Heritage Park and Conversion of the old Salting factory into salt water and tidal pools.
This PFC is an investigation of a complex subject such as the industrial archaeology that survives in the maritime edges of our landscape, the Rías.
Singular buildings that have created and explain a social, economic, cultural and productive space, that of its sailors and inhabitants, traces in the territory that are undervalued.
The lack of communications by land motivated a whole productive chain around the fishing activity upstream and led to these factories, generating an important port.
The ‘salgadeiras’, located by the sea, whose preservation technique dates back to Roman times, are the germ of industrialization and around which the rest of the existing industry grew. Galicia’s period of splendor in Europe in the 20th century.
Currently, more than 100 factories inventoried are abandoned in the Ría de Vigo, the count increases as we go up towards the North.
The project aimed to rediscover history, to recover it for the memory of the people, to give back a use linked to the sea to the buildings, in short, to value what belongs to them.
