Competition for the construction of the ephemeral architecture pavilion TAC!2024. The location of the competition is the Puerta del Sol in the city of Vigo, well known for the statue of ‘El Sireno’, by the Galician sculptor Francisco Leiro.
The Contemporary Pavilion: Meditative element of interaction with the environment
The idea of the productive landscape of the estuaries is raised. The bateas, cultivation constructions where an unparalleled marine ecosystem develops, and their plankton, living luminescent organisms that regulate the functioning of their environment, come to the surface in the pavilion.
Consecration of the metamorphic object of El Sireno
The metamorphosis of the object – The metamorphosis of the square. New reality of the environment – square defined by plane (x and z). Transmutation to new hidden reality, the submerged, plane x and (- z ). Display of latent patterns of the Productive landscape. Equalisation of the water-air environment. Immersive experience. Lowering of the plane of the water that emerges to the surface.
Ecology devours the city: Industrial infrastructure as a new urban landscape.
The pavilion draws on works by landscape artists such as Dani Karavan, Makoto Sei Watanabe. with the strategy of culturally occupying a space in minimalist terms and numerical symbolism. The pavilion situates the infrastructure as a contemporary landmark of social communication by placing a grid of poles that generate spaces of circulation and connection.
The future of the pan infrastructure: climate change, food insecurity, a future towards biotechnology.
With rising water temperatures in the Rias, the rafts are threatened not only their plankton, but their very existence, and with it the livelihood of an entire region.
How do we transform our productive landscape, how do we reinvent our historical industrial infrastructures to face the new challenges? What are the moral limits of biotechnological crops as an alternative, where do we place the life of the cultural landscape, the history…? The hidden, submerged nature, the long-term consequences of climate change, are manifested by the lowering of the ground plane. What is water is now air.
Life cycle
The pavilion is designed according to the principles of the circular economy. Concrete blocks from public works fences will be reused, stones will be returned to the quarries of origin, packaging material will be used in the festival packaging and LED lights will be used at Christmas time. The pavilion aims to generate zero waste and a minimal footprint on the landscape.
