Public competition for open-air swimming pools on the beach of La Concha. Arousa: The history of a pool and its landscape, an approach to the topography of clam nurseries.
To think of Vilagarcía de Arousa in the abstract is to conceptualize the image of a landscape of submerged stakes, piles of sand, lines of stones on the horizon at low tide. To think of a fruit, the clam, in fertile land, in a productive landscape. Territory of memory, worked generation after generation. The clam nurseries, farms submerged in tidal water, which the population has been carving into the topography. A landscape of tradition, culture and shared future.
This is the enclave of the swimming pools, the beach of Compostela, maritime union with Carril.
The project reflects on the geometry that modifies the land by the work of women and men, on the valorization of a unique geographical particularity, on a sustainable management.
A “dune” topography is proposed to contain the pools, and the regeneration of Compostela beach as an environmental protection area. A minimum landscape impact is sought in the proposal and its reversibility: the excavation of the land for the pools is avoided, specifying the use of prefabricated concrete systems.
The protection of the maritime-terrestrial coastal landscape necessarily involves an action that can be changed over time in terms of construction. An environmental recovery of the original dune landscape by planting native flora and species.
The ecological protection of the sea-land interaction, the coastal management and the linking of the equipment with its natural character through the recognition of its morphological and topographical characteristics in connection with the beach and its activity. Urban landscape – productive landscape – ecological landscape.
